Finally, there's a Billminder Gadget that will pop up in the Windows Sidebar if you're using Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. Quicken can now handle new types of accounts, such as 529 college savings plans and PayPal. It's also a bit easier to categorize your transactions so you can track how much you're spending on things like eating at restaurants and home improvements. There's a new feature called My Savings Plan that attempts to make the process of creating a budget more user friendly. This version also adds a few nice, but subtle refinements. That way you can quickly find the check by just clicking on the icon in your Money transaction list. You may download an image of a cleared check from your bank, for instance, and link to that image from your Money checkbook.

There are many potential uses for this feature. The most notable addition is the ability to link transactions to image files. It's a convenience, but not much more than that. When you click on the Insights program item you can glance at various charts and see your cash flow situation, what bills are coming due and whether you've overspent in certain categories without running the program. The most noticeable additions to Microsoft's Money, now called Money Plus, are so-called Insights.

With that said, the annual updates to both Money and Quicken are becoming increasingly incremental.

Both can help you figure out how to save money more effectively and track your investments, even if you have multiple accounts scattered across many brokers and banks. If you're not using one of these software programs, they're worth trying. And unlike personal financial websites that charge ongoing subscription fees, with Money and Quicken once you buy the software you're done, with an important caveat explained below, and you're in control of your personal data. They both do a great job pulling all your financial information together in a single place so it can be easily monitored.
